After a career in architecture and a second spell at university to obtain a degree in painting I finally accepted that the pull of three dimensional creation was still strong. So six years ago a night school pottery class introduced me to the joy of clay and cemented my visual interest in studio pottery to the need to make my own work.
My concern usually is to produce vessels that are more sculptural than practical and at this stage in my learning process to let the clay take me towards a final form not necessarily envisaged at the start. I use the wheel on its own, but much of my work combines one or more thrown elements or is entirely hand built.
In my own studio I usually work with stoneware, and so far with commercial glazes, sprayed and dipped. At present the happy accidents of fighting gravity with wet slabs or distorting thrown forms are my main interest.
