Online Talk – 6th April 2021, 7pm – 8.30pm

Claude Assuage – Wood Firing

Part of my team building a 1m3 fastfire wood firing kiln for Otar Vepkhadze in Garikula / Tbilissi (Georgia)

“Over the last 15 years I have been involved in wood-firing kiln projects in a many places. Japan, Russia, Denmark, and of course France.

In most cases I have designed and built kilns with local teams, typically for ceramic centers or as part of artist residencies. Often I was also asked to fire, train people or otherwise assist with the gathering of “wood firer” ceramicists involved in building and firing the kiln. Apart from the technical challenge of designing the kiln best suited for each unique situation, the human experience has always been my main motivation, building not only kilns but teams!

I will talk about wood firing kiln technology and different types of kiln. I will also show some examples of the different aesthetic results that can be achieved, and explain how they are created. And we will try to keep some time for questions and discussion!”
