Sally Woodford

After studying 3D design at Middlesex Polytechnic I moved to the Isle of Wight in 1981. The jurassic coast of the island, with varied beaches, beautiful land and seascape provides a wealth of inspiration. Using traditional coiling and slab building processes and a ‘what if’ approach to making, I look to find my own personal vocabulary in clay. I use a variety of clays, some with added body stain and oxides and various firing techniques, low and high temperature, and am always willing to embrace the art of the accidental.

I aim to evoke an emotional response, be that to the structural essence of the piece or its association with nature, perhaps a polished beach stone made up of compacted marine sediment or grey clouds scudding over the landscape.

I have taken part in craft fairs and exhibitions, including projects with an Isle of Wight based craft group, resulting in exhibitions of art in response to collections within museums and galleries. Since moving from the east to the west of the island work has been on going to create a new studio. I am now able to begin developing the forms and techniques I have been using to produce new artwork to be displayed in my recently landscaped garden and newly renovated barn.
