Derek Higbee
Having watched the potter on the BBC black and white television many years back, I have always had a yearning to have a go at throwing. On retirement, the opportunity arose to join a pottery exam class where I passed with an A grade, much to my surprise. Following this I took a City and Guilds course in Ceramics.
My tea lights came from experimenting with very thin porcelain, liking the translucency of this clay. Adding lighting to the thin porcelain gave me the opportunity to modify the effect of different colours. Embossing various designs adds to the finished product. As a dabbler I have also experimented with 3D printing of clay. Also I have used my machine shop which has allowed me to incorporate ideas from other disciplines. Dorset born and bred, I trained in mechanical engineering, and can turn my hand to all sorts of practical tasks and projects (I have a patent for a switch used in disabled equipment). Plus an Audio Bicycle Pump for a blind man, as seen on Country file 13th November 2016.
