Neil Dewey

After a career in architecture and a second spell at university to obtain a degree in painting I finally accepted that the pull of three dimensional creation was still strong. My long-term visual interest in studio ceramics and a night school pottery class in 2012 cemented the need to make my own work.

My initial concern was the form of vessels rather than their practicality and at that stage in my learning process I let the clay take me towards something not necessarily envisaged at the start – I still do a lot of the time. I use the wheel on its own, but much of my work combines one or more thrown elements or is entirely hand built.

In my own studio I usually work with stoneware, and so far with commercial glazes, sprayed and dipped and poured. The search for precision while fighting gravity with wet slabs or distorting thrown forms has been my main interest. Recently the dynamic and sometimes happy accidents of less architectural control and additions to the clay body have swayed the course of my making.
