Sue Kelly

My work is developed from a personal response to the landscape, seeking to explore the experience of being in the natural world.

Mainly working in stoneware, I create simple forms with surfaces that are tactile and organic. My pieces are made using a combination of throwing and alteration. I work with the inherent qualities of the clay to produce textures that reflect aspects of the natural world.

I also produce smoke-fired pieces, which are by contrast burnished and smooth. Selected organic materials are burnt in the smoke-firing process which permeates into the surface of the ceramic artwork.

I have a studio in the New Forest where I create my own pieces and run pottery workshops, which has developed from my background in Fine Art and Teaching.
